Why was conjurer’s reputation at stake?
A. The conjurer was the master of the magic show. At first, the audience were thrilled and amazed at the tricks. But the Quick Man’s comments decreased his level of confidence and created doubts among the audience.

1) List the things that the Quick Man felt the conjurer ‘had-it-up-his-sleeve.’
A. A bowl of gold fish, rings, hen, pack of cards, loaf of bread, a doll’s cradle, a live parrot , a fifty cent piece and a rocking chair .
2) Why do you think the author uses the name ‘Quick Man’ in the story ?
A. The author used the name ‘Quick Man ‘in the story because he was very quick to comment and convince the audience.
3. How did the conjurer take revenge?
A. The cojurer’s reputation had sunk because of the Quick Man’s comments. He made a final attempt to woo the audience by a famous Japanese trick. He approached the Quick Man for his belongings one by one and destroyed them. Thus he took revenge by punishing the Quick Man for causing disturbance at the show by his absurd comments.

1. “Laugh with others and not at them”. What does this mean?
A. Laugh with others and not at them means it is cruel to laugh at others and make fun of them.Laughing at other people’s shortcomings ,misery and sorrow had nothing to do with happiness. It means that we are being cruel as we are hurting their feelings.
2.”This is a matter of concern as we are not using up our quota of laughter”. What is the matter?
A. The author believes that one should take a healthy dose of laughter everyday. But he is concerned as adults laugh only fifteen times a day as compared to children who laugh four hundred times a day.

1. Why did the mother of teenage daughters grow more and more impatient?
A. The mother of the teenage daughters grew more and more impatient because of the girls’ inability to control their laughter.
2. How did the girls convince their mother?
A. The girls told their mother that they were using up their quota of laughter reserved for Monday as they would be in school that day. They also believed that there was no need for them to ration their laughter as they did not believe in waiting to be happy.

A. a. Think of events, places and things that make us laugh.
b. Keep your eyes and ears open for things that can inspire laughter.
c. Learn to laugh at ourself by narrating a funny or embarrassing story about ourselves.


4. Laughter is a priceless medicine. Why?
A. Laughter is a priceless medicine because it cannot be bought or sold. Laughing heartily should be habit with us to keep ourselves mentally and physically healthy. From stress, high blood pressure and body pain to heartaches , it takes care of all ailments and we don’t have to pay a penny. Laughter is certainly priceless and invaluable.

1. ‘Then sit on the lid and laugh’ is repeated in the poem twice. Why do you think that has been done?
A. The line ‘Then sit on the lid and laugh has’ been repeated twice, because now the poet is free from the troubles and worries as they are locked in a box and it is the time to enjoy. The poet wants to convey that if we have a strong mind, then none of the worries will troubles us and we will be able to live happily.
2.’ Tell no one else its contents,
      Never its secrets share;’
Does the poet want us to deal with our troubles, once and for all and not think about them again?
A. The poet wants to convey that we should strengthen our mind in such a way that we are able to deal with our problems and drop them only in our case .Once we become strong individuals, it is easier to deal with problems and forget about them forever.
3. When does the poet want us to laugh?
The poet wants us to laugh only when we have hidden thoughts of failures, locked our troubles, worries, hurts and heart-aches securely in a strong box.

Q1. Where was king Sibi sitting when the dove landed on his lap?
A.  King Sibi was sitting on his own corner of the camp near the bank of the river Jamuna.
Q2. Describe the dove.
A. The dove was soft and white. It’s  feathers were ruffled in terror and it’s eyes were shut. It looked so limp as if it was dead.
Q3. What reasons did the hawk give for wanting the dove as food and not anything else?
A. The hawk said that God has created doves for hawks and other foods are inedible to them except fresh meat dripping with warm blood.
Q4. How was the weighing scale prepared?
A. The courtiers attached a beam to the branch of the tree. Suspended from either end was a plate from the kitchen, a  pointer, also improvised marked the centre of the beam.
Q5.  What happened as the king stepped on the pan?
A. When the king stepped on the pan, the other pan went up and the balance equalized.
Q6. Why did hawk tell king Sibi that ‘ the sin of ending six lives will be yours’?
A. The hawk was fainting with hunger and might die. His family consisted of six members and they would also die if the king denied food for the hawk.

A. King Sibi said so because the hawk intricated the king in his arguments.
